How to Increase Sales

Here are some practical tips for increasing your sales:

  • Run special offers that encourage your customer to buy more of something, or an additional item. Look at how Amazon use this technique: "Customers with similar searches purchased...." Even if your business doesn't sell direct by using the internet then you can still 'up-sell'.

  • Don't be afraid to ask your customers or suppliers for the names of people they think would also use you. Business people mix with business people and your customer will know a lot of useful contacts. Build your network.

  • Email your customers regularly to keep your company on their radar. This is especially important if you rely on repeat business and supply a commodity product. Tell them of new products, ranges or developments that will pique their interest.

  • Give rewards or incentives to regular and loyal customers. It's easy to neglect them in favour of new accounts. Don't take them for granted.

  • Get up close and personal! Understand your customer's business - what are the trends they are experiencing. Can you help them have the competitive edge through your products or services?

  • Give away samples - a small thank you included with the order will keep your customers returning and if that sample is something they don’t normally buy then it may just be another future order.

  • Apply Pareto's Law. 80% of your sales will come from 20% of your customers. So no prizes for guessing which customers you should focus your time on.

  • Train your sales team - endlessly!

  • Provide value.....for a lifetime. This retains customers, allowing you more time to develop more sales. Constantly look at how you can give value for money (note that we don't talk about the cheapest prices!) and continuously compare yourself to your competitors.

  • Finally.....Enjoy selling to your customers. It is true that 'people buy from people', so your customers will respond to your love of your job, your devotion to your company and your customers.....and your enthusiasm will shine through.
